6/8 Kafe presents Latte/Art – Kevin Leung Chung

From now and until the 19th of September, the walls of the 6/8 play host to a series of pastels and prints from Kevin Leung Chung. His second appearance at the 6/8 features self-portraits, the divine, biblical scenes, the illusion of repetition, nightmare black and whites to serene blurry pastels, aggressive extroversion to reigned in self-awareness.

Chung - "You Have Control Over Me"

Kevin Leung Chung was born and brought up in Hong Kong. He came to the UK on his own in his late teen. After spending two and a half years on a graphic design course at De Montfort University, he left the course without graduating from it. Currently, Kevin works in new product development at a concierge company.

“The thought of having to constantly produce work does not sit well with me. I could go without picking up a pen to draw for weeks. The need to create arises only when a thought or an image becomes so vivid, and needs to detach from me to become a physical being on its own.

Chung - "Self Portrait"

Portrait is my favourite subject. I find emotion and feelings shown through facial expressions are very captivating.”

Come grab one more good summer Cold Brew’s at one of The Independent’s Top 50 Coffee Houses, have a nose at the latest art to adorn our walls.

Chung - "Order"

Monday morning breakfast queue…

6/8 Kafé

…. I wish!! This would be the dream of every coffee shop owner, but things just don’t work out that way. We are open a few months now and day by day we are looking, feeling and acting more like an established coffee shop. We’ve even expanded our food offering beyond cookies.

I felt that we have finally arrived when FAKE magazine wanted to do their launch party here. This photo was taken by Craig during the party and summed up the buzz we are created in Birmingham and I felt it was an appropriate way to end this photo blog.

We have lift off!

Staff at Work

The launch party was quickly arranged after I was reliably informed it was a legal requirement by Steve of Hasbean.

It was great to see Helen, Craig and Lizzie in full flow serving friends and family who turned up to support us. I could relax and mingle, knowing that Lucinda was competently running the floor.

Also in attendance were coffee lovers, who would later become firm supports of the Six Eight cause, including Coventry Jim, Greg-D and not forgetting the ever-present J-man.

Sign of the times

Attaching our sign

I suppose you could say that we are sort of open for a couple of weeks now.

We open a few hours a day now, perfecting our coffee drinks. We even have a fridge.

People don’t know we are open. I wonder why … oh yes, maybe it’s something to do with the great big sign outside that’s missing.

I must re-read the “Dummies Guide to Opening a Coffee Shop” No time to relax now, our launch party is tomorrow.

Blue Monday

Blue cup

We spend the day practicing making drinks. Helen has already joined. Craig comes for an interview and gets surprised when we ask him to be the final member of the opening team just 30 minutes after the interview.

We discuss whether we should open tomorrow or not.

It’s freezing outside, we’ve no fridge, no sign, no heating, and no real food options.

Can you open just with coffee and cookies? Sod it, let’s go for it.

Watch out for the Booji Wooji Man !!!!

Paul Alcala's artwork

AKA artist Paul Alcala. Paul was born in Mexico, raised in San Francisco, lived in Vancouver and Portugal and now in Brum. When the artwork was shown to me by his son-in-law Nick, I knew I wanted it in the coffee shop.

The artwork also brought much needed colour and warmth to the whole place.

Committed to the cause

Lucinda making coffee

Lucinda becomes the first person to join Six Eight. She believes in what we are going to with the project: with the coffee, with the art, with the vibe.

I spent three days training her, on the fourth day .. I’m sure she was training me …ggrrrhh

The eagle has landed

Blog91

James and John arrived with our brand spanking new espresso machine today; this is one awesome beast in every respect.

This machine has incredible temperate control, dual boilers and looks fantastic!

All I have to do is learn how to use it.

Jailbreak !

Blog8b1

I went to the Hasbean Roastery today.

I spent all afternoon with Dale and Steve going through all the different espresso blends that might be suitable for us.

There were some great coffees to choose from. In the end we decided to go for Jailbreak : it was smooth and balanced as an espresso but also great with milk.

Labour of Love

The counter is finally finished. Each slat has been individually stained, oiled and then nailed to the main body of the counter.

This has been a time consuming and sometimes frustrating piece of work, but the final result has been worth it.

Counter Intelligence

M, Johnny and I discuss the most important design feature to the whole project: the counter.

I had asked M to go to my favourite coffee bars in London and come up with a design inspired by them but with our own twist.

At the heart of the design was a huge counter which was both striking and intricate.

The best laid plans are … always on the floor

Our design plans

We’ve spent a lot of time, energy and money on the plans. But whenever I am in the shop they always seem to be on the floor or tucked away where nobody can see them.

After much discussion with James Hoffman of Square Mile Roasters and James Phillips of Dose Espresso, I authorised payment for a brand new, state of the art espresso machine: The Synesso Cyncra.

I came, I saw, I wondered

M (Maciej) pops into the shop to check if the build is true to his design. There is a “the man from Delmonte…he says yeah” moment as he has a good look around and smiles to give his nod of approval.

M has been with me right from the beginning of the project when I went to buy a bike off of him. There was a misunderstanding, we had a laugh and I hired him.

Meanwhile, Johnny has already started laying down the beautiful solid oak flooring. In my mind nothing beats warmth and character of solid wood flooring.

Another fix, but still no coffee

Blog31

Richard the sparky and I discuss the electrical needs. We also talk about the cabling for the speakers.

Even though it is a small space, I really want crystal clear sound. I want the music to be heard and enjoyed. I’ve already talked to the guys at Superfi about my needs and they’ve come up with a great system.

This is also the day the bad news keeps rollin in.

The company making the beautiful shells for the La Marzocco has gone bankrupt, so I will have to look at other options.

Chris the builder has also phoned me to tell me that he is delayed on his current job and cannot do the plastering as planned. But I’ve already ordered the solid oak flooring and booked Johnny the Joiner for Monday.

I remember the builder’s mantra “Do the flooring last ….Do the flooring last.”

The first fix, but not the coffee kind.

Blog21

Dave the plumber gets to work on moving the pipework from the back of the unit into the main area.

We want a large L-shaped bar so that customers coming into the shop can be greeted and staff can have a bit of banter with customers already sitting down.

I know it’s early in the build but I feel strangely calm; things seem to be going according to plan.

Demolition Man

Chris and his boys arrive earlier than scheduled, which was what I had been pushing him for, but it finally dawned on me the huge task in front of me.
The unit is stripped bare within 3 days.
The machine I want is Flame Red La Marzocco FB70, which normally has a lead time of 6 weeks, so I’d better get a move on it if I want to open before Christmas.

Got the keys today… No turning back now.
